Working in the fitness industry

Working in the fitness industry can be a satisfactory full-time job or it can provide a great second income. There are plenty of opportunities to be either employed or work for yourself and many have made the transition to this sector when changing their careers.

The fitness industry qualifications we offer are all REPS accredited and make you work-ready by just taking one course. All of our qualifications are taught face-to-face and provide a full supportive learning experience with NO EXAMS. We are committed to helping our students achieve their goals and have had much success in getting students through courses where others have failed.

The Fitness Pathway

Step 1: Level 2 Fitness Instructor
The first step is to become a fitness instructor. There are no pre-requisites for this course and just this once course can lead on to a successful career in the fitness industry. This qualification is REPS level 2 accredited and you can do it  in gym based exercise, teaching activity to children, exercise to music and water-based exercise. You can obviously do more than one of these streams and WimX currently offer the gym-based exercise and the teaching activity to children course.

Once you have the fitness instructor qualification, you can apply for the many REPS level 2 jobs out there and you are able to teach exercise to groups and if hold  the gym instructor qualification, you can provide gym inductions as well as gym maintenance and administration work.

WimX offer the level 2 fitness instructor as a standalone as well as in combination with the L3 personal trainer.

Step 2: Level 3 Personal Trainer
If you want to work on personal training programs and advise on nutrition with your own clients then you need to take the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. This will provide you with all the benefits of the fitness instructor but also enable you to charge and earn more per hour and get more involved with your clients. If you are seeking a job within a gym, then having this qualification will improve your salary.

L3 Certificate in Personal Training £1400 (includes free L2 gym instructor or free kettle ball course.)

Facts about the fitness industry

Did you know that the fitness industry is one of the few industries that has continued to grow in the UK throughout the economic recession? In 2013 the industry was values at £3.92 billion and with the rising number of mobile trainers, boot camps and outdoor fitness instructors it is just not reliant on the gym industry alone and it is easier than ever to start up as a self-employed fitness trainer.

If you did want to work in a gym, it’s good news there too as there are circa 170 new centres opening up every year in the UK and they are also looking for fitness instructors and personal trainers.

 

Course Units

L3 NCFE Certificate in Personal Training

The NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training is an ideal qualification for those in the exercise and fitness sector who wish to complement their existing skills. Learners must have achieved the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing before they enrol on this qualification. The qualification aims to provide learners with the understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Personal Trainer in a variety of settings. This includes understanding health and safety in a fitness environment, customer service, anatomy and physiology, personal training programs and sessions, and nutrition. Learners successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 3.

The units in this course are as follows:

  1. Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  2. Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  3. Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  4. Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  5. Programming personal training with clients
  6. Delivering personal training sessions
  7. Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity program

L2 NCFE Certificate in Fitness Instructing – instructing gym-based exercise*

This qualification aims to provide learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions via the context of gymbased exercise. Learners successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 2.

The units in this course are as follows:

  1. Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  2. Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  3. Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  4. Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  5. Planning gym-based exercise
  6. Instructing gym-based exercise

L2 NCFE Certificate in Fitness Instructing – teaching activity to children*

This qualification aims to provide learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions via the context of exercise and physical activity for children. Learners successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 2.
